India has more than 1000 universities across the country. For ages past, has always been a great place for science research and education. In modern times, when university ranking has become a metric of research quality, we hardly see Indian universities in the top 200 world’s best university list. However, these data don’t reflect the true scenario of science research in India. I think many universities in India can be equally comparable to many other world-class universities. In the last 20 years, the culture in India has changed a lot. So, if you are an international student and would like to know more about where to study in India, this article is for you.

Most of the Indian research institutes are government-funded. Some universities get more funding for research than others. I will give my preference of the best institutes in India keeping few factors in mind: 1) Research quality, 2) for research, and 3) Prospects.

1) Indian Institute of Science (IISC), Bangalore. https://iisc.ac.in/

Application fees for international students have been waived. Follow the link for more information on funding and admission queries. https://oir.iisc.ac.in/

2) Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR): https://www.tifr.res.in/

TIFR is an autonomous institute in India, which focuses mainly on basic science research. It was founded in 1945, and the main campus is located in Mumbai. TIFR also has research centres in Pune, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. TIFR offers programs leading to M.Sc and PhD degrees. It doesn’t have any program dedicated to UG students. It has a very good reputation for basic research in the field of physics and astronomy (QS world ranking by subject = 151–200). TIFR works under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), thus, it has a good amount of funding for research.

3) Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay: https://www.iitb.ac.in/

IITs are popular engineering colleges in India. Although IITs primarily focus on training UGs in engineering, each IIT has a basic science research department. IIT Bombay stands top of the list in basic science research among all 23 IITs in India. Founded in 1958, it is the second oldest IIT. The institute offers varied program like BS, Integrated MS, and PhD. (2021 QS world ranking =172). It has an annual budget of around 100 million US$.

4) Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Kolkata and Pune: https://www.iiserkol.ac.in/web/en/ — gsc.tab=0

Follow the link for more information on funding and admission.

5) Indian Association for the Cultivation Of Science (IACS), Kolkata

Founded in 1876, IACS-Kolkata is India’s oldest basic science research institute. It is also the only Indian institute where a researcher was awarded a Nobel Prize (CV Raman 1930 for the discovery of the Raman effect. We all read about Raman spectroscopy in our UG class). In world research, IACS is a celebrated name. It offers various such as Integrated MS, Integrated PhD (MS+PhD).
